Todd Bridges, former child star of the hit television series Diff'rent Strokes, is excited to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the show's debut on November 3, 1978. Bridges looks back on his time working on the show with gratitude and fond memories.
Diff'rent Strokes was a groundbreaking series that not only entertained millions but also addressed important social issues with humor and heart. The show centered around two boys from Harlem, portrayed by Bridges as Willis Jackson with Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson, who are taken in by a wealthy Park Avenue businessman, portrayed by Conrad Bain as Mr. Drummond, and his daughter, played by Dana Plato as Kimberly Drummond.
The combination of talented actors, unforgettable storylines and even an appearance by The First Lady of the United States, made Diff'rent Strokes a cultural phenomenon that left a lasting legacy in the world of television.
Bridges, the last living member of the show’s original cast, said, "I am incredibly proud of the impact Diff'rent Strokes had on television and the positive messages it conveyed. It was an honor to be part of a series that brought laughter, love, and important life lessons into the homes of viewers across the country."
"My favorite episode was in Season 2 and involved Arnold meeting his hero, which just happened to be my own real-life hero Muhammad Ali," Bridges recalls.
Throughout its eight-season run, Diff'rent Strokes tackled issues such as race, adoption, and class differences, making it a trailblazer in addressing social topics through entertainment.
"In today's world, the storyline of Diff'rent Strokes might raise some eyebrows, but that shows how far we've come in fighting racial division. The show was a product of its time, and it fearlessly tackled issues that were relevant then,” Bridges said. “It’s fun to think about a reboot where we could reverse some roles, reflecting the progress we've made in society."
